Day 7: Life Cycle of a Flowering Plant
Objective: Students will identify the stages in the life cycle of a flowering plant.
Materials:
Instruction:
The students will be introduced to the kinds of vocabulary an ideas associated with plant life cycles. The lesson will begin by reading Eric Carle’s book “The Tiny Seed”. After reading the students will discuss and review each stage of seed growth thoroughly until the teacher feels they have grasped the stages. The teacher will identify five new vocabulary words on the board (seed, flower, leaves, stem, and roots). These terms will be defined on the board and reviewed with the class. Each student will then return to their seats and divide a page in his or her science notebook into five sections. Have the students once more say the five stages of growth (seed is planted, roots begin to grow, stem begins to grow up out of seed, the leaves sprout out of the stem, flowers or fruit grow on the plant and make new seeds). The students will then write their five sentences in each box of the stages of growth and draw a simple picture to demonstrate each stage. They will then receive a foldable with the five new vocabulary words on them. Students will fold and cut the foldable and write the definition underneath each new vocabulary word.
Differentiation:
N/A
Assessment:
Collect students science notebooks and check for correct use of language and labeling of each stage. Walk around and check students foldable for the correct definitions.
