Day 5: Life Cycles of a Frog
Objective: Students will describe and identify the life cycle of a frog.
Materials:
Students will gather on the rug and listen to the story From Tadpole to Frog by Wendy Pfeffer. After the story students will be asked to identify the stages the frog went through before it was completely developed. As the students discuss generate a list of vocabulary words on the board (such as tadpole, eggs, tail, metamorphosis). Once students are finished discussing have them go through the new vocabulary words on the board until they understand their definitions. Have students return to their seats and pass out an informational worksheet on the life cycles of a frog. Have students go through and highlight wherever they see one of the new vocabulary words. Once that is completed hand out the Frog Life Cycle worksheet and science notebooks. Students will then cut and paste the stages of a frog's life into the corresponding box and paste the entire worksheet into their notebooks. To conclude the lesson create a discussion where students compare and contrast the life cycle of a frog to that of a butterfly. Ask "how are their life cycles the same?" "how are they different?". Pass out the What a Change! worksheet so students have a visual of the two different life cycles right next to each other and label each step.
Differentiation:
Students who finish glueing their worksheet into their science notebook early can write out the new vocabulary words and their definitions on the next page in their notebooks.
Assessment:
Collect students' science notebooks for assessment.
