Day 8: Seed Need
Objective: Students will explain what seeds need to grow and how they develop over time
Materials:
Instruction:
In order to understand the life cycles of a plant, students must also understand how they grow. Begin lesson by asking students what they think a seed needs in order to grow. Make a list of responses on the board. Then instruct students to get the large sock they brought from home and put it on over their shoe. Take students outside (preferably an area with dirt and grass on the ground). Have students walk through the dirt and grass to try to get as many things stuck to their sock as possible. Once students return to the classroom have them take their socks off and lay them on a large flattened cardboard box. Instruct students to walk around and look at each sock and discuss what they see. Discuss the seeds and other things that are stuck to the socks. Take out science notebooks and record any observations or drawings of what they see. Have students remove any seeds they see in the socks and carry them over to the shoe box. The shoe box will be filled with soil. Point out the list on the board of the things the students thought a seed would need to grow. Plant a few seeds in the box, water, and place in a spot of sunshine. Have students return to their desks and draw what the seed looks like at this stage and how they think it will look as it continues to grow.
Differentiation:
N/A
Assessment:
Check for student knowledge and understanding of each stage by checking the science notebook entries for their predictions of what the seed will grow to look like.
